He starts to say, "Look!" and then when she looks up at him, he says, "Oh, no!" because she has stepped on the joined red dragonflies he wanted her to look at on the rutted, grown-over car path up from the beach. She starts to say she's just grazed them with the side of her foot, but he says, "No," and picks up the red dragon flies and says, "They're squashed." Then she feels big and oafish on the over-grown path and tries making a little joke, saying, "Well, that was some menage a trois, I hope, at least, they felt something." He starts to say something and stops. He is quiet on the rest of their walk, and through the lunch they fix and eat standing together at the sink, or later, when she stings him with her mouth and he starts to say "No!" but she stops him with her mouth again, this time so soft he thinks of the frill of Queen Anne's Lace on another beach road with another woman who told him to look at the flower's center drop of blood. |
